Recognizing Dedication to Our Schools and Community

The Students In Action (SIA) initiative is a component of the national Jefferson Awards Foundation, facilitated within the Toledo Region by Leadership Toledo. The Jefferson Awards are regarded as one of the nation’s highest honors for community service and volunteerism and are referred to as the Nobel Prize for Public Service.

At 41 area high schools, student leaders increase community awareness and a dedication to service through volunteer opportunities. SIA spotlights extraordinary efforts by ordinary students. During the 2016-2017 school year, 107 young leaders were honored for their service during school-based ceremonies throughout the region. But thanks to caring leaders and supportive advisors at each school, the impact of SIA has grown beyond an opportunity to receive an award. In fact, students at participating schools accounted for well over 450,000 hours of service, creating a new generation of caring and stewardship for their communities.
